AVOID CORONAVIRUS SCAMS!
Since the first coronavirus case was discovered back in Spring, there have been alarmant reports all over the world regarding the increasing threats of coronavirus scams. In the United States, the Federal Trade Commission, the Department of Health and Human Services, and other cybersecurity watch dogs alert the public about fraud schemes related to the novel coronavirus (COVID-19). Scammers are using telemarketing calls, text messages, social media platforms, and door-to-door visits and other sophisticated methods to perpetrate COVID-19-related frauds.
Back in October, CYBERmania published posts on how to avoid scams and phishing attacks in general. However, before the proliferation of the novel coronavirus scams, we feel the need for us to support that awareness campaign in educating the PCTA community on such scams. To do so, we’re putting together for you a quick list of articles and videos found online that provide some helpful tips on how to protect yourselves against coronavirus scams. As a rule of thumb, always remember that: "NO legitimate businesses or organizations will ever call you and ask you for your personal information such as full names, address, or your social security number."
